Things to do in Taupo – Craters Mountain Bike Park
If you haven't tried mountain biking before, go to Craters MTB Park. It's perfect for beginners and intermediate bike riders who want to improve their skills.
It's something that everyone can do. Bring the whole family and enjoy the tracks, pine forest and the fresh air.
There is 50 km of single tracks at Craters MTB Park. Grade 2- 5. The grade 3-5 tracks contain some steep climbs, narrow trails, technical obstacles and jumps.
The best part with Craters MTB Park is:
- Thanks to mother nature and the volcanic pumice soil, it drains itself so that you can bike all year round. It's also sheltered from the wind, and because it's a geothermal field, you will most likely see steam rising at some parts of the Park.
- The tracks are linked, which means you can spend 30 minutes or a whole day at Craters MTB Park. You decide.
You will need to buy a membership to ride at the MTB Park. The money goes to the MTB Club so they can maintain the trails.
One day / 1 week is $10
Annual membership is $50
Annual family membership is $70
You can pay for the membership online:

How to get there:
The MTB Park is about 6 km from Taupo township, and you can ride the Huka Falls track from Spa Park to get there, or you can ride next to the Wairakei drive / Thermal Explorer Highway and go to the Redwoods trails. If you don't want to bike all the way, Taupo Bike Hire offers bike delivery and pick-up services for an additional fee.
There are two car parks. One next to the Wairakei Drive and the second one is at the MTB Park; you can't get any closer!
Turn onto Karapiti Rd and turn next left, there will be signs for Craters MTB Park.
After your ride, you can go and see the impressive Huka Falls or bike down the road and jump into the geothermal hot pools at the Wairakei resort.
